EDWARD F. DURBECK III, compiler (Oceanside, CA, USA)
The following items are not meant to represent every complete
opera and operetta recording in the history of the Melodiia catalogue.
These listed opera and operetta recordings represent only those Melodiia
recordings currently extant in The Durbeck Archive. The Durbeck Archive
is a private collection of sound recordings dedicated to the documentation
of classical vocal music (classical vocal recitals, choral, opera and
operetta) issued on long playing, 33 1/3 rpm (LP) recordings during
the “LP era,” ca. 1950–1990. Included in this archive
are all of the below listed operas and operettas originally recorded
or published on the Melodiia label, some subsequently reissued on other
record labels outside of the Soviet Union, some properly licensed and
some not. In order that an opera or operetta may be listed in this archive
discography, the specific recording must be physically owned by The
Durbeck Archive. Therefore, all listings are primary source entries;
there are no secondary source listings. If the reader needs further
information about any of these recordings, a completely detailed entry
for each listing may be found on the data website of The Durbeck Archive
at: www.datalogue.info
(Datalogue® is a registered trademark of The Durbeck Archive). Further
information about The Durbeck Archive may be found at: www.durbeckarchive.com.
The Durbeck Archive now contains approximately 50,000–60,000 LP
sound recordings of which 8,500 are complete opera and operetta recordings
and is currently looking for a new academic or scholarly institutional
residence.
Each side of a Melodiia pressed LP (долгоиграющая
пластинка) published
in the Soviet Union contains a different number. Items having identical
conductors and orchestras but different label numbers are later pressings
(editions). Dates given after the title of an opera or operetta are
the first performances. Wherever possible I have included the recording
dates. To be consistent I have spelled the composers’ names, conductors’
names and orchestras in the Latin script as they are usually given in
North America (e.g., Tchaikovsky, not Chaikovskii). Titles published
in the Soviet Union are given in the Cyrillic script with a translation
in the Latin script. Some Melodiia recordings use the MK (Международная
Книга [International Book])
label for export. For Melodiia recordings published outside the Soviet
Union, I have listed the composer, piece and conductor in the spellings
on the album jacket.

There are many recordings of Russian operas that do not credit the
source of the performance or the recording. These are generally assumed
to be unlicensed, or “pirated” performances originally released
on the Melodiia label. A few of them acknowledge Russia or USSR to be
the source of the performance; some of them list casts which do appear
on existing Melodiia recordings; some merely list fabricated generic
names e.g., “National Opera Singers and Orchestra — Recorded
in Europe.” Since Melodiia was the only recording “company”
in the Soviet Union, these recordings may be considered Melodiia recordings
